05 / INFRASTRUCTURE MAPS

Move from one cable to the bigger picture.

A connection diagram answers a different question from a room plan. RackDocs provides both: topology based on cable records and location backgrounds with positioned assets.

WHAT THE ADMINISTRATOR GAINS

Start with a location or group of racks, then navigate to a device, cable or asset on the plan.

01 / INFRASTRUCTURE MAPS

Choose the scope, then the detail level

Location, rack, device type and connection filters define the data displayed. Detail levels change its presentation: from locations and racks to grouped devices and a free layout.

Collapsed groups simplify larger diagrams. A bundle shows its cable count and opens the underlying list. An endpoint outside the filter indicates a connection beyond the current scope; it does not represent a free port.

Expand relationships down to devices

Expanded groups reveal equipment cards and lines representing recorded cables. Different connection families, including network and power, can be reviewed in the same environment. Selecting an item provides its recorded details.

Use the free layout to prepare a readable diagram for the team. Saved positions share the client and location scope, while collapsing groups can support personal viewing. Crossing lines do not automatically create a connection.

Place assets on a location background

Add a graphic background, such as a room plan, then position existing assets on it. A marker can identify a rack, device, mounting place, module or cable. Selecting it displays information and a link to the asset record.

Zooming, panning, asset search and code labels support navigation. Save marker positions for the team. This adds spatial context without maintaining a separate inventory within the drawing.

Practical workflow

Prepare for a branch visit

  1. Filter topology to the location and review connections that leave the scope.
  2. Expand the relevant rack down to devices.
  3. Find the asset on the location plan and open its record for mounting details.
Understanding the scope

Maps reflect recorded inventory. They do not provide automatic discovery or monitoring. Moving a marker does not change a device’s rack assignment; the background is not a replacement for CAD, GIS or measured survey drawings.

Screenshots come from the working RackDocs application and show a demonstration environment with fictional infrastructure. They include selected views and screen details; the application is evolving. Screenshots retain the Polish interface in this English guide.
